Today I
drove by a construction site for urban living spaces. I read the name of the complex, it didn’t
really impress me, but what caught my attention was the word they used to describe
what kind of units these were: flats.
Now, in some areas that’s a common term, but in the area I live in they
are usually called apartments or condos.
They used the word ‘flat’. By
adding this not-so-common term they added a new life in the attempt to grab
your attention and captivate the heart.
This sounds like a typical marketing ploy, and it’s used because it can
work.
Why are we so attracted to
something ‘new’? Because we want to be awake and alive, that’s
why. “But I’m breathing, doesn’t that
mean I’m alive?” and “I’m reading this, right now, doesn’t that mean I’m
awake?” Yes, part of you is. But we are like sleeping giants, with a
lifetime and more of experiences and knowledge that lies dormant within
us. Occasionally we create a new
experience, and the pleasure of that moment snaps us into consciousness, so we
can relish each nuance before slowly – going – back – to – sleep.
Why are
these awakenings so special to us?
Because during those times we step out of the storyline and into our
true self. On some level we understand
that these moments give us life and tap in to our purpose and passion. It can be challenging for even the most
dedicated seeker of the soul to distinguish between the story and the
storyteller. Every one of us looks for
that doorway into total awareness. We
wait for that next moment of consciousness to strike.
How can
we manually open that door? You could
always buy a ‘flat’. Okay, that’s not
the most practical way to bring something new into your life, at least not if
you want that sensation more often than not without relocating your living
space. Besides, let’s get it straight - it’s
not the flat that brings the excitement and awareness into your life, you bring
it into your life. Want more? It’s easier than you think. It’s just two little words. Ready?
Let go. That’s it, let go.
We do
this by focus. You can call it
meditation, but let’s not limit ourselves to one time of the day (or week, or
that one time in six months that we ‘meditate’). All you do is let go. It can be letting go of the day, the
problems, the solutions, worries, projects and whatever else lingers. It can be letting go of the past, the
unfinished
business,
the unfortunate mistakes, and the unspoken words. Or it can be releasing the disagreements,
promises, compromises and expectations we have placed on others, or they have
placed on us. All of these say the same
thing: let go.
What
happens when we let go? We create a
little more room for something new, without the expense of buying that new
‘flat’, or taking that trip, or starting that new relationship. You can have that newness in a blink of an
eye in the privacy of your own personal energy space any time you want. Those new spaces may not always blossom into
the monumental moments of life, but many of them will bring a new breath of
life into the sleeping giant.
